1. What is Controlled Atmosphere?

An active process to regulate modified atmosphere composition, in which initial concentrations of gases are controlled and monitored throughout the transit by the addition or removal of quantities of gas as established by the TransFresh controller.

2. What is Modified Atmosphere?

A beneficial atmosphere mix established at the time of service based on respiration rate of the cargo. Used for shorter transits and specific commodities.

3. Where are TransFresh services available throughout the world?

Please refer to our service network locations. If you have a question about a port not listed, please call us directly in the U.S. at 831-424-2911.

5. What commodities benefit from TransFresh Modified Atmospheres?

There are a variety of commodities that benefit from being transported in either Tectrol® Modified or Controlled Atmospheres. Please refer to our commodity benefits or contact us directly for more specific questions.

6. What are the Tectrol® Atmospheres made of?

Tectrol® Atmospheres are made up of O2, C02, and nitrogen found in the air we breath. The levels of O2 and CO2 vary depending on the specific commodity being serviced.

7. How do the TransFresh Atmosphere systems work?

Beneficial atmosphere set points are reached for the specific commodity being serviced by injecting nitrogen and/or CO2 as soon as possible after the cargo is stowed. There are two distinct services offered. Modified Atmosphere service is offered for shorter transits between 5-12 days. Controlled Atmosphere service is used for more sensitive cargo and for longer voyage times. For the Controlled Atmosphere system a microprocessor/controller is used to monitor and adjust the atmosphere based on specific beneficial set points established for the commodity being serviced. Controlled Atmosphere service requires the use of a controller, supplied by TransFresh, that manages the atmosphere using specific set points. The controller is constantly monitoring oxygen and CO2 concentrations and maintaining them at the desired levels.

8. What is the procedure for opening/unloading a container that has been transported using TransFresh Tectrol® Atmospheres?

Open the doors with the reefer fan running and let the container sit for 30 minutes. A placard is placed on the back of every container in several languages with instructions.

10. What do I do with a TransFresh® controller that has been retrieved from a container?

Please e-mail our Marine Service Center for complete instructions on what to do with the controller. TransFresh is eager to retrieve the controllers and will cover all costs for returning them.
